Ennis Lions Rebuild Stairs, Support Community Initiatives, and Prepare for Halloween Events
On October 26th, four members of the Ennis Lions Club made a difference for local resident Annie Morgan by rebuilding a set of rotting wooden stairs. Lions Mike, Jim, Bryce, and Dennis completed the project in just one day, thanks to the generous donation of materials by Ennis Building Center. Special thanks go to Kyle and his dedicated staff for their support.
In addition to this service project, the Ennis Lions sold rifle raffle tickets at the Hunter’s Feed, raising funds for community initiatives. These initiatives include maintaining Ennis Lions Park, providing Santa and candy at the Ennis School Concert, supporting the Ennis Halloween Carnival, and donating to the Ennis Food Bank. The lucky winner of the rifle raffle was Tyler Powell.
The Ennis Lions are also selling tickets for the Montana Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation’s ATV Raffle, which supports grants for community members requiring costly procedures or equipment that local Lions Clubs need help funding.
Looking ahead, the Ennis Lions will host the Halloween Carnival on October 31, starting at 6 PM in the Ennis Elementary Gym. The Lions’ Fall Bingo will also take place on Halloween, beginning at 7 PM in the School Lunchroom.

Ennis Lions Park Pond Updates
The new East side of the pond shoreline has been completed thanks to Shorty Roberts skill with an excavator and 7.5 hours of work. A small peninsula and two indented half circles were added. In addition, the depth of the pond on that side helps restore the original depth we had prior to gorging that should help fish survive when the weather is hot. The change in shoreline and removal of obstructing trees really opens up the area. Plans are to add grass seed and move about 50 cubic yards of rocks and sand behind the West ballfield fence. The pond has significant material now stirred up so it will remain murky until this clears. We will add our new electric aerator system as things begin clearing.Park Managers
Ennis Lions Club Eye Testing Screens 731 Children in Madison County
Madison County, MT – October 2024– The Ennis Lions Club successfully conducted its annual Eye Test this fall, screening a total of 731 children across all five Madison County schools: Ennis, Harrison, Alder, Sheridan, and Twin Bridges. This year, 124 referrals were made for further evaluation by eye doctors, highlighting the importance of early detection in preventing vision issues.
Since 1925 when Helen Keller urged Lions to be “Knights for the blind in the crusade against darkness,” the Lions around the world have been dedicated to addressing preventable sight and blindness challenges. The Ennis Lions take pride in continuing this mission within the communities.
A special thank you goes to Lion Cathy Leinonen, who served as chair for this year’s event, ensuring its smooth execution and outreach to local families. The schools administration and secretaries are also to be acknowleged for being so welcoming. The Ennis Lions are committed to supporting families in need, offering assistance in partnership with the Montana Sight and Hearing Foundation.

Providing camp facilities south of Red Lodge, Montana, to groups serving youth
The Lions Beartooth Mountain Youth Camp began in 1927 as the Billings Lions Camp. It is located 10 miles south of Red Lodge, Montana, just off of the scenic Beartooth Highway and a short distance (as the crow flies) from Yellowstone National Park. The camp provides semi-rustic facilities to groups of about a hundred people and primarily serves youth-oriented organizations that don’t have their own camp. The setting on the Lake Fork of Rock Creek adjacent to the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness is perfect for outdoor experiences for kids of all ages.
Facilities Description and Availability
The Lions Beartooth Mountain Youth Camp is a rustic facility with sleeping cabins and basic infrastructure designed in the 1930s. It is available only during the summer months (June through August). Cabins do hot have heat – except for a few with fireplaces. Baths have hot water and the kitchen has been upgraded to current standards including propane grill, stove and ovens; walk-in refrigeration; upright freezers; dishwasher and stainless steel sinks and counters.

Off-season use of the one winterized building at the camp is not available at this time. Limited phone service (for use in emergencies) coupled with the lack of off-season maintenance on Lake Fork Road (which covers the last 1/2 mile to the camp) has created a hazardous situation for group use. Emergency services may not be able to reach the camp and hiking out to the highway through snow and driving to Red Lodge can take at least a half-hour and may leave others at the camp with limited supervision and transportation.
Scheduling Use of the Camp
The mission of the Lions Beartooth Mountain Youth Camp is to support outdoor experiences for youth by providing facilities to organizations that do so. As such, youth groups receive first priority for use of the camp. Others may be accommodated during vacancies after youth groups have been scheduled. This typically happens in January for the following summer but additional time is needed to allow scheduled youth groups to complete arrangements. That means March is probably the earliest we can respond to non-youth groups.

The Billings Lions Club participates in the Montana Lions Vision Screening program
The Billings Lions Club participates in the Montana Lions Vision Screening program. Lions Clubs International Foundation, The Montana Sight & Hearing Foundation and Lions Clubs across the state have joined together to fight against blindness. We do so by offering vision screening for children to assist in diagnosing and eliminating causes of blindness as well as promoting personal development through improved sight.
The program uses a Plusoptix vision screening device to provide a reliable and objective screening result. An objective screening result is not biased by interpretation of the person performing the screening nor by poor co-operation of the child. Measurements are performed from 3.3 feet (1 meter) away. One second after establishing visual contact, the measurement is complete. An age dependent “pass” or “refer” screening result is provided immediately.
A “refer” result indicates your child should see an eye care professional for a comprehensive exam. A “pass” result indicates eye health is good for now, but retest regularly as the eyes change with growth.
